The Artist Speaks
Giles has developed his sculptural work from a two dimensional background having been trained in formal painting. It is interesting to see that most of his ideas usually translate into an abstracted version of the human form. He conveys emotions and feelings through the visual use of the figure, and often portrays an innocent humorous quality. Ideas initiated as drawings are often developed at a later stage into sculpture, or vice versa. His fondest way of working is in relief, which he believes is half way between sculpture and drawing.
“To the habitual gallery-goer the sculpture of Giles Penny is like a breath of fresh air. After the morbid trends of recent years, it is something of a relief to find an artist who does not rely on shock, obscuration to gain effect. Here is an original mind with some very interesting ideas and the ability to present them with clarity.”
