The Artist Speaks

Marlies Vonk's art work is clearly figurative with exuberant expression. Most of the times restrained with a keen eye for facial and bodily expression.

Marlies Vonk - Studio

She is specialized in the human figure. What stands out is her use of a 'dry oil technique'. She applies the oil-paint almost transparent like a watercolour, layer over layer on the canvas. She puts a lot of time in sketching and design, but when it really comes to painting, time never has been an issue.

Marlies Vonk, visual artist and European Master in Arts and Culture, combines unique traditional skills with personal commitment.

Marlies Vonk - House and studio

Marlies Vonk, European Master in Arts and Culture is a full time self supporting artist/painter since 1980. She and her partner and manager, Ton van Loenen, live and work in Oirschot, a small historical town in the South of the Netherlands. They recently moved with their studio/atelier to a beautiful almost 400-year old 'listed building' in the medieval Market Square that is surrounded by chestnut trees.

Study Trips

Marlies Vonk made, since 1980, many study trips as a self-supporting artist painter. She and her partner and manager, Ton van Loenen, lived and worked several years in USA: Dallas, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia and visited over forty states, followed by one year in the Antibes, France and two years in the Dutch Caribbean.

She also made extensive work visits: Colombia to sketch South American Tango; New Orleans, Aruba and Curacao for the typical, colourful Caribbean Carnival and Japan to sketch Kabuki actors, Sumo wrestlers and to study Geisha life at an authentic Japanese Geisha house.

From 1992 until 1998 she sketched and studied movement at some of the world's top-ballet companies. Such as the famous Martha Graham Ballet Company in New York, the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam and the renowned N.D.T. Nederlands Danstheater, The Hague.

For her European Master Degree in Arts and Culture she took intensive study weeks at the Montfort University, Leicester, England; Universidad del Arte Granada, Spain; and, Fontys University Tilburg, The Netherlands.
