Mike Woollacott

I have spent most of my working life in the meat and livestock industry mainly in the North and West Devon area. As an artist I feel I draw my inspiration from my surroundings. My work is mainly landscape and still life in acrylic, charcoal and pen and ink.

In 1994 I embarked on an adult art and design course at the North Devon College which led to a part-time degree course in Fine Art at the University of Plymouth. In 2001 I completed the degree course and achieved a 2:1 in Fine Art. I have had work purchased by the University of Plymouth.

I held a solo exhibition at the Queen's Theatre, Barnstaple in 2003 and have also exhibited annually with Triangle Art since 2004. I exhibit regularly with North Devon Arts and I have work displayed in the permanent exhibition at the Broomhill Art Hotel, Muddiford in North Devon. For four days in June 2007 I took part in the Art Trek Open Studio event which is part of the month-long North Devon Festival. I found this event extremely rewarding because of the interest shown by the many visitors to my studio.

My work has evolved from the North Devon landscape - an interpretation of my experiences and journeys. I do not have the facility to absorb images and experiences without the process of drawing, which has become an important part of my art practice. I have a need to paint and draw as a means to express myself.

Drawing and painting isn't about confirming what you think is there nor is it simply to make a recording of what is there - it goes deeper that that. The painting or drawing is about the landscape and the objects, the texture of nature and of objects, the reflective quality of light, the physicality of painting and drawing. The personal mark and hopefully the painting or drawing is independent of the landscape and should have a life of its own. I try through my art to make something that is exciting and interesting that might convey.
